Description

A delicious recipe for Southern Fried Steak served with creamy gravy.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef round steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup cooking oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ cup flour (for the gravy)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • red pepper flakes to taste (optional)

Instructions

  1. Tenderize the beef round steak with a meat mallet until about half an inch thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  2. Set up three shallow bowls: one with seasoned flour, one with beaten eggs mixed with buttermilk, and the last with plain flour.
  3. Dip each steak into flour, then egg mixture, and back into flour for an even coating.
  4. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry each steak for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. For the gravy, reduce heat to medium-low, melt butter in the same skillet, whisk in flour until combined, then slowly add milk while whisking until thickened. Season as desired.
